WordPress Hidden Gems: Old Permalink Redirects

September 17, 2010 Stephanie Leary Leave a Comment

Yesterday, I showed you that [link id=”6248″]the default permalink structure always works[/link], even if you’ve chosen a “pretty” one. Here’s an even lesser known trick: when you change your permalink structure, WordPress stores the old one and automatically redirects visitors.

Take a look at [link id=”6226″]your options.php page[/link]. If you’ve ever changed your permalinks, you should see the old value in the permalink_redirect_oldstruct option. Try visiting one of the old URLs! It should work.

Note that WordPress is storing just one old permalink structure — the most recent. If you’ve changed more than once, the older URLs won’t work.
