We’re flying to California tomorrow. I am so ready to be elsewhere for a week. The atmosphere at work is distinctly unpleasant.
I bought myself a little vacation treat: an ARC of A Companion to Wolves. I realized I’ll be on a business trip when it comes out in October, and I’ve been wanting to read this since the green dragonrider discussion1 came up. So.
What I find bizarre is that it’s still in manuscript format. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another ARC that wasn’t typeset — although, to its credit, this one does say “Advance Bound Manuscript” at the top instead of the usual review copy, not for sale, blah blah blah.
(Memo to bookseller peddling ARCs: You are an evil person for making money off a publisher’s freebies, and you are going to the special hell. Also, the package arrived quickly. Smooches.)

The real ARCS actually are quite lovely, and have cover art.
I would suspect that you got some kind of preliminary manuscript thingy there, and it might not be the final version of the novel.

Yeah, I’m sure it isn’t, which is what I get for being impatient. No worries… as vacation reading, it’s doing nicely, and it’ll keep me from going nuts and trying to find a release-day copy while I’m at a conference. Amazon can deliver it while I’m gone and take their sweet time about it.
Opinion after chapter three: thumbs up, and the collaboration is very seamless.
