This has been talked about everywhere, but I know some of my readers don’t keep up with tech news, so here you go.
As was expected once AOL settled their lawsuit against Microsoft in May, they’ve laid off the remaining Netscape team and killed the project. However, they’ve also commited $2 million to the new Mozilla Foundation, which will keep the Mozilla project going. Mozilla offshoots Firebird, Thunderbird, and Camino long ago eclipsed Netscape, and Firebird is being hailed as the best browser currently available.
This is all the more interesting on the heels of Microsoft’s quiet announcement that there will be no new versions of Internet Explorer as a standalone browser.
