I’m still mired in revisions, and I haven’t had much reading time lately, but I do try to give myself a break at lunchtime, usually with a book. This past week, I’ve been having lunch with Seanan McGuire, in a literary sort of way. I’d heard that Rosemary and Rue was a pleasant departure from the more tiresome sort of urban fantasy that is currently glutting the bookstores, and the people recommending it were right. Toby is a great character. Her personal problems are generally not of her own making, and she has good reasons for getting involved in supernatural investigations (or not, as the case may be). Her world is well-constructed and very different.
In short, I like. I finished the second book, A Local Habitation, earlier today, and then I went looking for the author’s website, as I am wont to do. A quick perusal of her most recent LJ posts is illuminating.
She’s mentioned Nick and Nora Charles and Veronica and Logan in a post lamenting the way unresolved sexual tension and happily-ever-after endings are handled in television. She is apparently a fan of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. (SO much love.) Her WIP list is as long as mine, and as varied. The “current music” bits of her posts feature Dar Williams and Glee.
I conclude that, not only do I like this person’s books, but she is precisely my kind of geek. She has a new book out tomorrow, hooray!
(And her website does not suck! What a relief. I rejoice with a small chair dance.)
