The Nyquil post

May 12, 2004 Stephanie Leary

I’m getting over a nasty cold. While I regain coherence, check these out:

  • Digital photo hacks Including the simple yet brilliant idea of using the camera strap and your foot for a makeshift tripod, and instructions on using Photoshop’s well-hidden Extract function to crop out backgrounds. Via Kottke’s remaindered links.
  • MorgueFile Free stock photos.
  • Web Hosting Ratings Searchable index of really cheap hosts. Terrible page design, fabulous content. Found in Web Design on a Shoestring, a book I recommend. The Frugal Host is an article based on the hosting chapter in the book.
  • Defensive Design for the Web Another great book I got at work recently. Check the sidebar for “Bulletproof Forms,” a chapter excerpt. My only wish is that the authors went into technical details on how to fix problems instead of why to fix problems, but I can see how that would have dated the book (not to mention embroiling the good authors in religious debates over servers and scripting languages). Anyway, thumbs up. Watch this space for details on the 404 error handling script I’m using at work.

WordPress for Web Developers (9781430258667)

This is a book for professional web designers and developers who already know HTML and CSS, and want to learn to build sites with WordPress. The book begins with a detailed tour of the administration screens and settings, then digs into server-side topics like performance and security. The second half of the book is devoted to development: learning to build WordPress themes and plugins.

This is the second, much-revised and updated edition of Beginning WordPress 3, with a more accurate title. Everything’s been updated for WordPress 3.6.
