Morning ramble

May 25, 2004 Stephanie Leary

Inspired by Favourite Favicons and new support in Camino 0.8, I spent the morning learning how to make cross-browser favicons work. Yay. A 16-by-16 graphic should not require three hours of research and code work, but hey, you can see the finished products here and at sueto.net. These fine decorative objects are brought to you by Graphic Converter and Google University.

(Short version: Create bitmap. Use GC to save as .ico. Upload. Add <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /> to index template. Add Addtype image/x-icon .ico in .htaccess if all else fails. Clear cache. Reload. Bang head on desk wondering why IE/Mac does not support favicons.)

The latest version of Camino has changed the keyboard shortcut to view source. I’ve been using it so long that cmd-E is a reflex; alt-cmd-V is not working for me. I know, you care.

I like the way this guy does his post dates. Am I adventurous enough to try something similar when I move to Textpattern? Do I want to muck with the design at all? Not until I’ve had a vacation, certainly.
