Buffy: “Chosen”

May 20, 2003 Stephanie Leary

Mmmm, series finale. Things I liked? The reference to that other Hellmouth in Cleveland, where Buffy lived in the Wishverse. Buffy vs. Buffy scenes. The Xander-Willow-Buffy-Giles moment in the hallway and the echo of Giles’s closing line from “The Harvest.” Willow’s spell. The fact that it made her all giggly instead of angsty. “Tongue piercing.” The little softball player. Angel’s departure. The pendant’s function. The sign falling. California’s new crater. The Scoobies’ informal Watcherhood.

Things I didn’t like? It felt like we were killing time for the first 30 minutes or so—although I have to say, that’s pretty much in keeping with this show’s season finales all the way back to the first season. Most of the relationship chatter (even with Angel, it began to grate). Willow’s recent inability to do what needs to be done without whining about it first. Anya. Spike’s final moments. And the fact that if Sancho’s prediction is accurate and the next season of Angel will bring us Spike-in-a-box courtesy of Wolfram & Hart, he will have fulfilled the Shanshu prophecy. I like Spike and all, but dammit! That prophecy is Angel’s. (I stomp my foot, I grind my teeth…)

I hope Joss continues the Slayer stories. I’m curious as to how he plans to resolve this ending with the history described in Fray.

It’s probably just as well that Angel doesn’t know what a guilty pleasure eating raw cookie dough is.
