Trust misplaced

August 13, 2002 Stephanie Leary

I should preface this by saying that this isn’t a politblog, and it’s not going to become one.

However…

This morning on the way to work I heard the brief summary of the day’s news. The guy who reads the news sits in the office next to me at work, so maybe I’m paying a little more attention now than before I got this job. The INS, he says, have chosen September 11 as the start date for a new program in which they will fingerprint and photograph all immigrants entering the US.

I’m sorry to say I screamed at the radio while driving down the highway.

YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THEY DON‘T DO THAT NOW?

What the fuck have they been doing with their time? The police fingerprint schoolchildren with the excuse that if anything were to happen to them, their fingerprints might help find or identify them. Whatever. I’m sure this is just a ruse to get all our fingerprints on file before we become crooks. We do this to our own schoolchildren, but the INS just waves immigrants through the door?

“Yeah, come on in, no, we don’t need your photo or your fingerprints. We trust you not to break the laws of our country, with which you are mostly unfamiliar.”

WordPress for Web Developers (9781430258667)

This is a book for professional web designers and developers who already know HTML and CSS, and want to learn to build sites with WordPress. The book begins with a detailed tour of the administration screens and settings, then digs into server-side topics like performance and security. The second half of the book is devoted to development: learning to build WordPress themes and plugins.

This is the second, much-revised and updated edition of Beginning WordPress 3, with a more accurate title. Everything’s been updated for WordPress 3.6.
